Are You Looking to Reduce Stress, Remedy a Pain Problem, or Reduce Tightness From Exercise? You Are in the Right Place.

When you are experiencing a chronic pain problem you can be very frustrated. Many doctors will prescribe medications and injections and you still won’t feel well. Or you may have been prescribed physical therapy and while that may have helped a little it didn’t give you the results you hoped for.

Not many therapists focus with healing the soft tissues. Physical therapists focus on strengthening the soft tissues, chiropractors deal with the joints, and doctors prescribe medication.

Massage therapists can help heal the soft tissues. When the soft tissues undergo changes such as adhesions, trigger points, and tightness this will affect the function of the muscles and joints signaling pain. When the soft tissues are addressed this can help in many pain problems of the musculoskeletal system.

matt-squareHi, I’m Matthew Snow, Licensed Massage Therapist.  I have eight years of experience in a medical center and a wellness center. I have helped hundreds of people with many types of muscle and joint problems and pain.

I have helped many different types of people from: mothers who have low back and neck pain from carrying their young children, athletes of all kinds like crossfitters, runners, basketball players, dancers, soccer players, martial artists, and hockey players. I have also helped people who have to sit in front of a computer all day and then commute.

My focus in my work is to be precise and relaxing. If you are coming in for a specific complaint I do an assessment to find the tissues at fault and spend time where you need it most. I also focus on relaxation because in order for healing and deeper work your body must be relaxed.

Education

I graduated from the two year program at the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy in 2006. While I attended massage therapy school I assisted the teachers for Massage Therapy 1 and 2, Kinesiology, and Anatomy and Physiology. While in my third term the head of the science department, Dr. Joe Muscolino D.C, nominated me to be a tutor for Kinesiology. Since graduation I became a Certified Myoskeletal Alignment Therapist. This is a rigorous program that includes myofascial therapy, muscle energy techniques, and assessment. I am currently working to become certified in Orthopedic Massage Techniques.

Experience

After graduation I immediately began to work in a Pain Management/ Physical Therapy office under Dr. Jun Xu M.D., Adora Cruz P.T., and Dr. Robert Blizzard D.P.T. I have been there for eight years and am the Massage Therapist manager.

I performed massage therapy on twenty patients a day. Patients came in for a variety of problems from herniated discs, low back, neck, arm, and leg pain. And many others.

I have also worked in a spa/wellness setting where I was able to take the skills and knowledge I learned at the Pain Management office and apply it to clients in a less acute stage of pain.

Why I Became A Massage Therapist

I became a massage therapist because at a time I needed it most I used movement and exercise to heal my depression and deal with stress. I have never had a chronic pain problem where I had to give up activities I enjoyed. But I know what movement did for me and I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to give it up.

I believe that you were meant to move and when a pain condition prevents you from what you were meant to do that affects your ability to be free, express yourself, be healthy, and happy. I want to help people regain that freedom.

My Personal Story

I grew up with two family members with mental illness. As a teenager I had depression and had developed bad habits and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Then 9/11 happened and my best friend’s father was in the 1st tower on the 92nd floor. This event changed my life and made me realize I needed to make changes in my life.

Three weeks after 9/11 I started studying martial arts with a friend’s father. My martial arts teacher was the envy of his martial arts peers. They poked fun at him because of the way he trained his students. These guys were old timers who had hip replacements, bad knees, and arthritis. They believed their training was superior and old age and arthritis was just the way it was.

My teacher wanted his students and his peers to understand the most important thing about martial arts was to be healthy and to have fun. What was the point of exercise and training if it meant you couldn’t move at sixty? I admired him for his enthusiasm for health and his enjoyment of life.

Nine months after 9/11 another one of my very close friends passed away at age 21. This was devastating for me because this was the first time anyone really close to me had passed away. My family and friends could tell I was upset and were worried about me.

If it weren’t for my new found appreciation for moving and exercise I am not sure what would have happened to me. I was able to channel all of my stress through martial arts.

I studied everything about martial arts I could including chinese medicine. I became very interested in the healing arts and in helping people heal. And then in 2004 I found the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy and knew that was where I needed to be.
